Avenda's new novel 'Strange Fruit'

Old Loula eases her feet onto an upturned pail and tells the stranger the story of 8 year-old Hester.

Three lives interweave Hester's -  long-legged midwife Sissie Jane, just made for running to cabins in the dead of night to snatch back lives; bunioned Libby and her red shoes; and Old Loula herself with her chipped enamel bucket.

But the stranger has come looking for a different story, a mystery life in the Essex grey marshes.

STRANGE FRUIT is a story of fears and prejudice and intolerance. And throughout runs the simple humanity of good women raising other people's children with love.

STRANGE FRUIT is available from Amazon and at the Atelier in Monsegur.

After many years of studying the collective arts, art history and art as culture in England and California, Avenda’s style draws on a polymath background in film, drama, photography and creative writing.

“I like to paint emotion rather than objects and inspiration comes mostly from light falling on the lines of faces and bodies, with the great flourishes of Modigliani, Schiele and Klimt never far from my thoughts. And because I am always up for a surprise I use a lot of water and let gravity add what it will. The enormous Four Season panels of Cy Twombly took my breath away, just to see the power of moving paint. And words. I like words. I often add them, and their power is locked in there even if I paint over the top before a work is finished.”

Avenda also creates greetings cards using her paintings.
