'What is this ACAM?', I hear you ask.

Well, it stands for 'Association de Commercants et Artisans de Monségur' whose goal is to promote the dynamism of their bastide town situated in South West France, or more precisely the Department of Gironde about 50 minutes drive south east of Bordeaux.

We want to let you know about the many different events which are happening in the town.

The volunteers contribute to the enjoyment not only of tourists but also to the Monségurais people who live in the area.

For your pleasure they have organised:

- Celebration of the pig in March

- The wine fair at the start of June - 8 June this year

- 12 night markets - every Wednesday from the end of June until the start of September

- A fund for games and clothes for the children in November

- A Christmas Market in December

All the energy and commitment of the shopkeepers and artisans of Monségur are freely given to create a heart for this 750 year old Bastide and to share with you the pleasure of living somewhere exceptional.

La "Première Page" is situated a stone's throw from the main square in Monségur. The store is run by Vickie who offers you a wide range of French and English second-hand books at resonable prices.

She offers a "read and return service" on all her second-hand book sales. If you wish to bring back the book, she will refund to you half of the original price.

In her shop, you will also find a varied selection of new French and English books at bargain prices. Vickie also sells an extensive range of commercial and hand-crafted greeting cards for all occasions.
She invites you to come and view her selection of small gifts, book marks, knick-knacks, wrapping paper and associated products. If you cannot find the book you want, Vickie will order for you.

UB40 are without doubt the world’s biggest, most popular, well loved reggae band and one of the UK’s finest musical exports.

Formed in 1978, the Birmingham band found world-wide success with the massive number 1 hits ‘Red Red Wine’, ‘Can’t Help Falling In Love’ and ‘I Got You Babe’. Thirty years on and 54 UK hit singles later, the band is still going strong with Duncan Campbell taking over from brother Ali on vocals. More recently the album ‘Love Songs’ (a compilation of 20 of the band’s best loved tracks) reached no. 3 in the UK album chart.

Lead guitarist Robin Campbell said, “UB40 are really excited about performing in Europe this year, as we always get an incredible welcome from the fans.” Last year’s shows in Europe, USA, Bermuda and Canada with the new line up proved a great success, one of the many highlights being a sold-out show to 18,000 people at the Hollywood Bowl. The audience’s acceptance of the new line up was overwhelmingly supportive and we can’t wait to play in France again.”

Not many bands can boast seventy million records sold; from their debut ‘Signing Off” to the forthcoming album ‘Labour Of Love IV’. UB40 have brought their unique reggae sound to the masses. As live performers, UB40 are second to none, having toured the world and sold out arenas on every continent.

The initial line-up was formed in a suburb of Birmingham during the summer of 1978 and comprised of Robin and Ali Campbell on guitar and vocals, Earl Falconer on bass, Brian Travers on sax, James Brown on drums, Norman Hassan on percussion and Michael Virtue on keyboards, together with MC Terence ‘Astro’ Wilson. Another of the Campbell brothers, Duncan, declined to join the band, thinking they wouldn’t get too far, but would seamlessly replace Ali on lead vocals thirty years later!

Their combined single and album sales are in excess of 70 million with a staggering 41 Top 40 singles! A list of UB40’s best-known songs reads like a litany of alternative national anthems: “One In Ten”, “King”, “Tyler”, “Many Rivers To Cross”, “Cherry Oh Baby”, “If It Happens Again”, “I Got You Babe”, “Don’t Break My Heart”, “Rat In Mi Kitchen”, “Homely Girl”, “Kingston Town”, “Higher Ground”, “Red Red Wine” “Can’t Help Falling In Love.

Their phenomenal success has earned them a rightful place alongside such great British artists as the BEATLES, the ROLLING STONES, LED ZEPPELIN and Irish supergroup U2. They’ve had Number 1 smash hits in virtually every chart on the planet, including the notoriously hard-to-crack American market,

Monségur, Gironde: A bastide, a river

Monségur a trypical bastide with the town square surrounded by arches, it's iron covered hall, it's streets and parallel 'ruets' (back lanes), it's church, ramparts and ramble around the 'chemin de ronde'...

A living bastide with it's fairs, markets, it's cultural and sporting life...

A bastide in the midst of beautiful countryside, varied and picturesque formed by the river Drot and it's tributarries...

'Aquesta franquessa fo dada als borgues e a las borguesas de Montsegur per la dona Helianors...

This franchise was given to the town and townspeople of Monségur...

Thus started the foundation charter agreed on 26 July 1265 by Eleanor of Povence, the wife of Henry III Plantagenet, King of England. Since the 13th century, Monségur kept to the strict plan of bastides organised around the square.

Robert Darniche Square

This square, 78 metres on each side was built on the largest part of the headland. With it's covered hall and shops under the arches, it allows you to wander around the shops protected from the weather. Recent renovation work has restored it's former proportions and levelled it out, making it an open, welcoming space.

The Iron Covered Market

This is a product of the 19th century 'Golden Age of Iron'. Replacing an earlier wooden structure, it was built in two phases: from 1862 to 1872 the peripheral galleries were constructed and it was capped off with the central skylight in 1897.

As the wording of the estimate prepared in 1866 emphasizes, the galleries were not intended for purely commercial purposes - they were meant to add playful, enjoyment and beauty dimensions, to 19th century urban planning.

In 1897 the plum market was at it's peak. Construction of the central area completely roofed over the market again, and also resulted in the square losing it's pleasure garden appearance.

Ever since, the market place has hosted not only the weekly Friday market, but also local speciality and flower festivals. It is regularly turned into a ballroom or restaurant and has been used for major cultural events including theatre and the famous '24h du Swing' jazz festival.

The Governor's Tower

This hexagonal tower houses a staircase set in front of the main building. It was built at the end of the 15th century. after the Hundred Years War, and is an example of late gothic style. Pilasters on either side of the door bear these strange inscriptions "brehim" and "ebrihim". Nobody knows their meaning.

The tympanum is decorated with a Tudor arch and at one of the angles, a bartizan rests on a corbel in the form of a griffin. A sign of nobility, the weathervane with which it was endowed, was taken off during the French Revolution. Recently, work has been carried out to restore the mullions and the leaded, blown glass windows.

Avenda's new novel 'Strange Fruit'

“I like to paint emotion rather than objects and inspiration comes mostly from light falling on the lines of faces and bodies, with the great flourishes of Modigliani, Schiele and Klimt never far from my thoughts. And because I am always up for a surprise I use a lot of water and let gravity add what it will. The enormous Four Season panels of Cy Twombly took my breath away, just to see the power of moving paint. And words. I like words. I often add them, and their power is locked in there even if I paint over the top before a work is finished.”

Avenda also creates greetings cards using her paintings.
